The Last Game

I don’t know exactly what it is, but The Last Game kept me coming back five days in a row, even though it is a very simple game. I absolutely love the art style, and the 8-bit soundtrack that runs with it. The gameplay is super smooth.

I love the edgy characters you meet in every room. It is the little messages in between, in every small interaction, where you really feel the developer’s humor.

The principle is simple: every run starts from the beginning, and you get a little better each time. But no run is the same. The rooms and the skills you pick up come together randomly, so so far no run has repeated, and not even the first three bosses are always the same. Sometimes something comes back, of course, but mostly everything rotates.

In co-op it is super fun. Each player is mostly focused on surviving, so it is not a strategy game you plan out together. But spending that time together makes it great co-op fun.

Joining is super simple. We played with two controllers: when you start a new game, you are asked to switch on the second controller, and off you go.

It is the whole package: great music, great art, great little characters and really fun gameplay. Simple, but sometimes simpler is better. One of my favorite games I have tested so far, and I recommend everyone try it.
